Story-Board: On Narrative, Perspective, and Painted Experience

January 3, 2026 - January 30, 2026

Opening: Saturday 3rd of January 2026 4PM - 6PM

Artspace Warehouse is pleased to present Story-Board, a group exhibition celebrating the expressive possibilities of character and narrative in contemporary painting. The featured artists transform familiar figures, animals, and natural motifs into storytellers of emotion and imagination. Each draws from observation yet departs from realism, using exaggeration, gesture, and mood to reveal the inner life of their subjects and create moments that feel immediately relatable.

This exhibition highlights how moments of perception evolve into a painted language of color, surface, and expression—one that invites viewers to recognize parts of their own experiences within each scene. Through this translation, personal experience becomes something shared, and emotion finds tangible form. Together, the artists offer a study in empathy and attention, where every brushstroke suggests the presence of a story still unfolding.

Michelle Fillmore centers her paintings on the human figure as a site of emotional resonance. Her subjects appear immersed in quiet reflection, their bodies rendered with tactile clarity while their surroundings hold a sense of openness and possibility. Through subtle distortion, symbolic objects, and shifts in perspective, she constructs images that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable, offering a space where interior life becomes visible through careful, deliberate mark-making.

A different kind of narrative emerges in the work of JJ Galloway, who brings a playful yet precise lens to everyday encounters. Animals and objects become animated with personality and wit, forming visual vignettes that feel lively and unexpected. Humor becomes a storytelling tool as expressive detail and character-driven compositions reframe the familiar in inventive, engaging ways.

Naomi Jones paints wildlife with emotional sensitivity, shifting animals from mere subjects to protagonists. Pattern, color, and framing intertwine to create portraits that feel intimate and monumental at once. Each creature is rendered with a sense of presence and individuality, highlighting the quiet tension between natural instinct and human interpretation.

Kellie Newsome incorporates character-specific details that anchor each painting in lived experience. Everyday objects, subtle gestures, and small cues within the scene offer moments of recognition—details that prompt viewers to imagine themselves within the composition or recall the distinct textures of their own lives. Through her attentive handling of personality and setting, Newsome creates images that feel both inviting and particular, allowing familiar moments to unfold with renewed clarity.

Amy Tai blends observation and imagination to create scenes that hover between memory and dream. Figures, animals, and symbolic elements intertwine in fluid compositions that echo narrative fragments without defining them outright. Gentle shifts in color and line form psychological spaces shaped as much by emotion as by form, revealing how internal stories find clarity through the act of painting.

Narrative images have a way of finding their place in our thoughts. A single expression or setting can spark memory, agreement, or a feeling of being understood. In that exchange, a painting’s story becomes part of how we make sense of our own.
