Say When
July 26, 2025 - August 29, 2025
Opening: Saturday 26th of July 2025 4PM - 6PM
Artspace Warehouse is pleased to present Say When, a group exhibition showcasing original contemporary artworks that highlight the evolving relationship between paint, surface, and space. These featured artists explore how raw canvas can function as more than a backdrop—transforming into a visible, active element within each composition.
Working across a range of abstract and expressive styles, the artists incorporate untouched areas of canvas to create contrast, structure, and rhythm. In each work, the material itself becomes part of the story. Through intentional mark-making, layered pigment, and spacious compositions, the artists demonstrate a refined sense of visual timing—knowing exactly when to say when.
Taylour Martin is a Los Angeles-based artist whose practice explores balance, emotion, and memory through softened abstraction. Her works often feature diluted pigments, blurred edges, and floating forms that gently interact with the untouched areas of the canvas. By letting large sections of raw linen remain exposed, Martin creates visual pauses that draw attention to the subtle shifts in color and brushwork.
Jason DeMeo’s abstract paintings are built on fluid movement, layered pigment, and controlled transparency. Broad brushstrokes and atmospheric washes move across the surface, often fading into open areas of raw canvas. These unpainted sections are an intentional part of his composition, bringing balance, contrast, and lightness to the work. Rather than filling every inch, DeMeo lets the material guide the image—creating space where the surface itself becomes part of the visual impact.
Len Klikunas is an American abstract artist whose work focuses on tonal minimalism and spatial rhythm. Drawing inspiration from architecture and design, Klikunas applies neutral gradients and repeated forms that are framed by generous portions of untouched canvas. His compositions rely on the visual tension between painted elements and bare surface, using negative space to reinforce structure and restraint.
Meredith Walker creates textured abstract paintings that blend a contemporary aesthetic with a subtle folk-art sensibility. Her work often features layered brushwork, earthy tones, and simplified forms that echo traditional handmade techniques. She often uses exposed raw canvas to frame her compositions, allowing the material to become an active element within the artwork. This interplay between mark and margin gives her paintings a grounded, tactile quality, where the visible surface contributes to both structure and softness.
Rue Bootay is a self-taught artist whose expressive, gestural works blur the line between spontaneity and control. Known for bold linework and fast, intuitive mark-making, Bootay allows the canvas to remain visible as both a compositional anchor and a breathing space. The raw ground provides contrast and clarity, making each gesture feel more deliberate and alive.
Say When will be on view at Artspace Warehouse from July 26 through August 29, 2025. This group exhibition invites viewers to experience how contemporary artists are redefining surface, space, and material—where the raw canvas is not hidden, but honored as part of the final composition.
