About

Rachel Taggart’s abstract paintings explore the way light passes through color and creates a sense of depth. Diluted acrylic washes settle into the raw canvas in translucent layers, allowing earlier marks to remain visible beneath the surface. Lines and softly defined forms move through the composition with a measured fluidity, creating an image that feels luminous, spacious, and quietly balanced. Rather than building the surface through dense applications of paint, Taggart uses transparency to create dimension. Areas of color overlap, recede, and emerge gradually, giving the composition an atmospheric quality while maintaining a clear visual structure. Her compositions contribute to a sense of calm without diminishing the movement held within the painting.

Taggart’s process is shaped by close observation, experimentation, and an intuitive understanding of materials. Her early studies in Biology and Education, along with years spent working in sewing, stained glass, construction, and other hands-on disciplines, developed the sensitivity to form and material that continues to guide her practice. Since beginning to paint in 2001, she has developed several distinct bodies of work spanning landscape and abstraction.

Rachel Taggart is a Canadian contemporary artist whose paintings have been exhibited in Toronto and New York and are held in collections internationally. Her work has been presented in corporate, healthcare, and public settings and has appeared on HGTV and in Canadian House & Home. Notable projects include a 2017 painting created for the United Nations in recognition of international efforts under the Montreal Protocol, now held at the UN Environment headquarters in Nairobi, and a permanent installation completed in 2025 for Simons Canada’s flagship Toronto Eaton Centre location.

Rachel Taggart

Rachel Taggart is a Canadian contemporary artist whose paintings explore light, color, transparency, and depth through layered acrylic compositions. Working with diluted acrylic on raw canvas, she creates abstract works that balance openness and structure, allowing color, line, and form to develop through a refined sense of movement and restraint.

Originally trained in Biology and Education, Taggart began painting in 2001 after years of creative exploration through sewing, stained glass, building projects, and other hands-on practices. Her background informs an intuitive approach to painting, where observation, experimentation, and material sensitivity shape a practice that moves across several distinct bodies of work. Her paintings include both landscape and abstraction, with each series reflecting a different aspect of her artistic language.
