About

Marisa Mu’s watercolor paintings celebrate liberated bodies in motion, using playful gesture and vivid color to create scenes that feel joyful, intimate, and full of momentum. "I Know What You Did Last Summer" gathers dozens of small figures across an open field of paper, each one rendered with a confident economy of line and pigment. Bright socks, patterned details, and shifting silhouettes build a rhythmic, choreographed energy, balancing spontaneity with careful spacing. The work feels light and buoyant at first glance, then gradually reveals a deeper tenderness around community, pleasure, and belonging.

• One-of-a-kind figurative watercolor artwork measuring 23 inches high by 23 inches wide
• Created with Watercolor on French Coldpress Paper
• Unframed (framing required for display)
• Signed by the artist on the front and back

Marisa Mu is an interdisciplinary artist based between Melbourne and New York, whose practice centers figurative watercolor and painting as a space for radical visibility, tenderness, and self determination. Grounded in lived experience as a queer woman of color, Mu explores queer expression, intersectional feminism, the Asian diaspora, and body liberation through imagery that affirms joy and agency as active, present forces. Originally from Australia, Mu brings an expanded, global perspective to contemporary figurative work.

Mu’s visual language is shaped by cultural lineage and diasporic memory, including her East Timorese Hakka Chinese heritage, and by a commitment to painting as a form of truth telling. Alongside her studio practice, she co founded Tits & Co., a global platform advancing cultural equity and elevating female and gender expansive artists.

Mu has been recognized with major milestones and awards, including being named Emerging Artist of the Year in 2019, and in 2025 she presented a major exhibition at New York City’s Gracie Mansion during Pride season. Her education includes a Bachelor of Design from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales.

Marisa Mu

Marisa Mu is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers figurative watercolor and painting as a space for radical visibility, tenderness, and self determination. Based between Melbourne and New York, Mu explores queer expression, intersectional feminism, the Asian diaspora, and body liberation through intimate works that foreground embodied presence and joy.

Grounded in lived experience as a queer woman of color, Mu approaches representation as both inquiry and refusal, using the figure to hold complexity rather than stereotype. Her paintings often celebrate liberated bodies in motion, pairing softness and immediacy with a clear political charge around agency, pleasure, and belonging.
