About

Painting for Togolese artist Kodjovi is fearlessly following an instinct. Kodjovi's work is honest and palpable: exposed, raw, and direct. His work is an unfiltered manifestation of his soul. Bright, energetic marks encircle rough textures balanced by the peaceful compositions emanating from below the surface.

This square abstract mixed media artwork on canvas features a bold, graphic composition set against a heavily textured matte black background. The center is dominated by a thick, impasto symbol resembling a stylized arrow painted in a pale off-white. Layered directly behind this central shape are thin, energetic slashes of orange paint that branch outward.

The dark composition is heavily framed by fine, white graffiti-like markings and abstract scribbles along the left and bottom borders. A patch of vibrant yellow paint accents the top-left edge, balanced by a smaller swipe of yellow mixed into the script at the bottom. Small white paint splatters and underlying details break through the dark surface across the top and side borders.

This 20-inch square mixed media painting is signed by Kodjovi on the back of the canvas. The many layers in his work further emphasize the texture and visceral nature of his canvases. Convenient local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by the gallery is included.

Kodjovi grew up in Lomé, Togo, where he first created art using salvaged construction materials before moving on to mixed-media, collage, acrylics, and oils. He moved to Paris in 2001 and then relocated to the United States in 2003. His paintings have been shown at Art Basel Miami, recognized by Red Dot Miami, and featured in interviews with the BBC, France 2, and TV5Monde.

Kodjovi

Kodjovi is a Togolese-born contemporary artist whose abstract paintings are shaped by instinct, movement, and an unfiltered relationship to material. Raised in a large family of eight children in Togo, West Africa, he began creating at an early age, making his first sculptures from discarded building scraps. This early resourcefulness developed into a lifelong practice rooted in experimentation, physicality, and expressive immediacy.

Kodjovi’s artistic achievements have received attention across Togo and neighboring countries, with exhibitions at venues including the Lomé city art center and Hotel Sarakawa. In 2001, he left Togo for Paris, where he continued showing and selling his work. He later relocated to the United States, living and working in Los Angeles and New York beginning in 2003. His international presence expanded further during Art Basel Miami 2018, where he was ranked as one of the Top 10 Artists at the Red Dot Fine Art Fair.
