Bold Homes Grow New Rooms: June 4, 2022 - June 30, 2022

Summer 2022 exhibition Bold Homes Grow New Rooms marries style with personality. The architecture of an artwork can be an expression of valuing something; it can, in the best cases, generate a sense of confidence. The featured artists are not only suggesting that civilization may have regressed from standards once attained; they are also considering whether painting today might have a function of depicting abstracted figures of the times and how the viewer at the same time can distance oneself from the figures altogether. All the supposed fantasy and the many details would then have to be understood as a kind of defensive magic. In this way, the artists tried to keep at bay the impositions of fears and turn them into joys.

Jonas Fisch's process is instinctive and organic, the paintings energetic and vibrant, emerging from his subconscious without judgment. They are constructed by feelings trying to find harmony. Endless figures, messages, layers, and symbols move in and out of focus as the eye explores his puzzle pieces with multiple solutions.

Alessandro Siviglia is an Italian artist born in Salerno in 1982 and now living in Rome. He was initially drawn to street art, where he was able to express his artistic interests by graffiti writing on large public spaces. After a 15 year stretch of taking a bold, guerrilla approach to art Siviglia began to hone his current style which combines his street art background with more traditional artistic conventions.

Impasto-painted strokes of bright colors are the framework of artist Shiri Phillips’ abstract artworks. Inspired by the vibrant surroundings she found growing up on the Mediterranean and the Southern Californian Coast, Phillips is driven by the philosophy of “color is life”. Her works have been influenced by impressionism and the geometric nature of graphic design.

Capturing fragments of dreams, memories and emotions in her surrealist paintings, Taiwanese-American artist Amy Tai blends cultures within her soft and sensual imagery. Tai is fascinated by the intersection of waking life and the dream state through the lens of the female psyche. Often guided by the mingling of her personal memories and reveries, she paints using acrylic, gouache, and ink.
