Clarifying Color

January 8, 2022 - February 4, 2022

Opening: Saturday 8th of January 2022 4PM - 6PM

Colors are everywhere. In our daily lives, we are constantly surrounded by them and they influence our emotions and how we feel.  Color theory is a set of rules that combines creativity and science. It sets the fundamental guidelines around color combinations and harmony that artists and designers rely on to make the correct choices for their creations. This is something that touches the lives of everyone and most people unknowingly make everyday decisions based on these concepts.  The artists featured in this month’s exhibition, Clarifying Color, have delved deep into the rainbow and have mastered the art of visual communication through the color spectrum.

Experimentation with different materials, textures, and techniques in each of Raul de la Torre’s paintings has been a point of discovery and a major part of his work. In his Fils I Colors series he finds the third dimension through the use of a myriad of colors and different materials.

Alex Eulert’s work reflects his interest in ancient civilizations and the juxtaposition between the modern and the classical. Process-oriented and expressionistically inclined, Eulert explores the colorful confluence between geology and archaeology, denoting a benevolent interplay between the natural and human-made. Delicate and dynamic lines of paint buzz and trickle around bold bands of color; evoking rhythmical compositions, emotional states, and natural phenomena. The cubical forms are suggestive of monoliths, pueblos, golden-green fields, as well as contemporary urban architecture.

Jodi Fuchs now focuses on creating modern abstract expressionistic pieces that have undeniable energy. Her medium is acrylic on canvas or panel and she often uses spray paint, ink, and oil sticks to enhance the work. It is Fuchs’ fascination with the pure creative force: understanding it, harnessing it, and expressing it, that fuels her painting process. Years of inquiry into the metaphysical aspects of life have influenced her studio practice. This is where the act of creation is the muse. By following intuitive impulses, Fuchs creates work that speaks to the chaos and stillness (and the reconciliation of these two forces) that is inherent in the human experience.

With an emphasis on geometry and color within his artworks, British artist Paul Westacott takes inspiration from the sunny California landscape to create his abstract paintings. The exploration of visual relationships is fundamental to Westacott’s work. The dialogue between color, form, line, and repetition is the vocabulary of the language that he uses to explore these relationships.

Like reliefs, Bernhard Zimmer’s compositions are built up from numerous layers of material and mark-making. Grids of diaphanously rendered faces and blocks of illegible text emerge in rich washes of color, their surfaces shift with the light and change the position of the viewer. Full of strength and fragility, Zimmer’s works reward patient viewing, revealing their rich visual nuances to those who take time to delve into their layers.
