Susan Washington incorporates modern textile, thread, and geometric vintage pattern paper into her painted mixed-media, abstract collage works, producing surfaces layered with textures and expressive line work. Her complex and aesthetically satisfying paintings contain an internal logic that is pushing beyond geometric abstraction. Her influences include the work of the early Synthetic Cubists, Abstract Expressionists and the St. Ives School of Painters. This 48 inch tall by 36 inch wide original acrylic and textile artwork on canvas is stretched, wired, and ready to hang. It is signed by the artist on the back of the artwork. Free local Los Angeles area delivery and installation. Affordable Continental U.S. and International shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.Susan Washington grew up in Brooklyn in a creative family. Her Japanese godmother taught her sumi ink painting when she was seven. This was the beginning of a life involved in art and fashion. Susan worked in the fashion industry in New York for 15 years before relocating to the Pocono Mountains. “My recent work continues the exploration of shapes that originate in tailoring pattern pieces,” says Washington. “My works over time have become more structural in their compositions. I utilize textile cutouts which have been previously sewn and/or painted. I allow threads and frayed edges to act as ‘painterly’ gestures within a loose grid of contrasting shapes that jostle for position across the canvas. I enjoy the tensions where shapes meet and create negative space or where color overlaps and interacts.”Washington's modernist approach to Cubist inspired artworks has gained international recognition for asymmetrical geometric elements that combine to form a complex, layered composition. Her artworks have been exhibited and collected internationally, including New York, Los Angeles and Shanghai.

A strong narrative runs through Susan Washington's work with references to her long involvement with collage, textiles, fashion, and art. She comes from a family of artists and by age 5 Susan was tutored in the art of origami and Sumi ink drawing by her Japanese godmother as well as watercolors from her father. She spent her teens deconstructing dressmaking as a punk fashionista. Washington then landed on 5th Avenue working at Dior and Nautica.
Gravitating to the oeuvres of Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell, Washington has continued to push boundaries, re-inventing her work with each new piece while continuing to maintain the cohesive thread that creates her signature look.
