Matt Bilfield’s mixed media artworks constructed from wooden dowels anchored into architectural plywood are a fusion of pop art and contemporary three-dimensional design. His careful placement of each individually colored peg creates a pixelated representation of a single image, which emerges and changes shape depending on the angle from which we view it. This unique perspective allows us to interact with the artwork in new and unexpected ways. His works have been exhibited and collected worldwide, including Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles, and galleries in New York, Zurich and Hong Kong.
This 23 inch square artwork is unique and hand-created with wooden pegs. It is wired and ready to hang. It is signed on the peg in the bottom right corner of the artwork. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable US and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity is included.
Mixed-media and sculptural artist Matt Bilfield lives and works in Los Angeles. Somewhat of a neat freak and minimalist who thrives on order and pragmatism, he is drawn to detail oriented, creative outlets to express his inner vision. Inspired by comic strips and Pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Bilfield creates three-dimensional sculptural artworks.
Bilfield's artworks are an extension of his attachment to planned design concepts. He relates the idea of pixilation in his work to old television graphics, from the age before digital. In this framework Bilfield is intrigued by the constant change of the image as the viewer watches, inactively. This perpetual shifting of visual stimuli causes him to conceptualize artwork where the vantage point dictates the image and saturation of color, in turn activating the viewer. While the television has the screen framework as its boundary, he wants to extend that limit to the dimensions of the room itself. His sculptural artworks feature thick outlines, bold colors and pegs acting as dots, critically transforming the comic inspired images.
He enjoys the challenge of getting the most functional and aesthetic impact out of design simplicity. In creating the subject matter for his work, his goal is to push the amount of emotion he’s able to portray using a methodical medium that forces him to make definitive color placement choices. Often times the placement of only a few pegs can directly affect the overall mood of each piece.
