About

Los Angeles artist Marc Raphael captivates by his abstract expressionism paintings influenced by New York's abstract expressionist movement. After encountering Jackson Pollock’s work for the first time in the 90s, Raphael was enraptured by the scale, energy, color, and abstraction, awakening his creative spirit. Raphael’s painting technique combines the movement of his body, the viscous flow of paint, the force of gravity, and the absorption of paint into the canvas in a mixture of controllable and uncontrollable factors.

This large original artwork by Raphael measures 79 inches tall by 65 inches wide and was created with acrylic paint on canvas. The sides are painted as a continuation of the front and the artwork comes ready to hang with no framing necessary, while the artist's signature and title adorn the back. This artwork can be installed vertically as well as horizontally. Free delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. A certificate of authenticity from the art gallery is included.

Raphael, a former K-12 teacher turned full-time painter, explores the depths of acrylic and latex paints, bringing unconscious thoughts to life through imaginative freedom. His process involves applying intuitive marks on raw canvas, allowing the painting to evolve naturally. With a balance of control and spontaneity, Raphael's creations evoke the spirit of jazz improvisation.

Marc Raphael's exceptional abstract expressionist paintings are held in private collections worldwide.

Marc Raphael

Upon his first encounter with the groundbreaking work of Jackson Pollock, Marc Raphael was struck by the grand scale, vibrant energy, bold color, and abstraction that would ignite a lifelong creative passion. Inspired by the New York abstract expressionists of the 1940s and ’50s, the California-based artist began a self-taught journey into action painting in 1991, channeling the movement’s raw intensity into his evolving style.

In his studio, raw, unstretched canvas is spread across the floor, ready to receive the first intuitive gestures of acrylic paint. Diluted pigments seep into the cotton fibers, creating a smooth, tactile ground. Then begins the rapid succession of drips, splashes, and swirling strokes, executed while pivoting around the composition. Each work emerges through a delicate balance of intention and instinct, as formal elements of color, line, and texture steer the painting toward its final form. This fusion of discipline and spontaneity mirrors the improvisational rhythm of jazz, a parallel that has led Raphael’s paintings to be described as “jazz-like improvisations on canvas.”
