Ashleigh Sumner's original artworks are inspired by industrial areas, inner-city communities, and the Los Angeles street art movement. Sumner’s mixed media process often involves iconic images mingled with photographs captured on her cell phone. These photos are printed and applied repeatedly to wooden surfaces, creating multiply stacked and torn layers of distressed paper imagery. Sumner’s natural love of text is often implemented in her work by incorporating pages from books of poetry, verse, lyrics and theatrical plays in a way that often makes a political or social statement involving class, gender, poverty and equality.
This one-of-a-kind 40 inch square artwork is a mixed media composition layered on wood panel of cultural icon Marilyn Monroe. Sumner's signature "graffiti ramblings" can be discerned among the layers of this artwork. The surface of this original artwork is covered with a smooth layer of glassy resin, which enhances colors and adds depth. It is signed, titled, and dated on the back by the artist. It does not require framing and is wired and ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping is available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.
The use of spray paint and “graffiti ramblings” is continuous, often as song lyrics, poems, or historic quotes. In some work, Sumner has focused on the concept of handwriting as a lost art form. She silkscreens handwritten letters, song lyrics, and speeches of some of America's greatest icons into some of her paintings. The use of handwriting is a signature detail found throughout some of Sumner's paintings. House paint is applied, scraped and splattered throughout the work, then partially sanded away with an industrial hand sander. Several heavy layers of resin are added to each surface and flamed with a blow torch to create a smooth, modern finish to gritty artwork underneath.
In 2014, Sumner was the winner of the Red Bull Curates Competition. Her work was subsequently highlighted in a special exhibition with SCOPE at Art Basel in Miami. Ashleigh Sumner's work is represented, collected, and exhibited internationally with great acclaim.
