Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Colbert's artistic journey began with early accolades and awards, highlighting his innate talent and deep passion for art. His educational path led him to Humber College, where he honed his draftsmanship skills, and subsequently earned a scholarship to the renowned Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto.
After graduating, Colbert worked as a graphic designer and
illustrator, building a solid foundation in design and visual storytelling.
However, he eventually decided to focus on his personal artwork, which led him
to develop his signature style of traditional figurative painting.
Colbert's paintings are known for their whimsical and mysterious
sense of wonder, inviting viewers to vicariously experience the emotional state
of the figures he portrays. He often positions his figures with their backs
turned towards the viewer, allowing them to feel as though they are immersed in
the scene, experiencing it firsthand. Each painting tells a unique story,
creating a new adventure for the viewer.
Colbert says of his work: “Drawing has always been the bedrock
of my art. And coming from the commercial art world, where creativity is highly
valued, I try to give each of my paintings a certain “magic” that will make
them rise above the ordinary and appeal to my spirit in some way. Regardless of the subject matter, there are unlimited possibilities in front of me, and each
painting is a new adventure.”
Colbert's work has garnered global recognition and is exhibited
and collected internationally.
